Weekly Recap

Filed under: Uncategorized,Weekly Roundup — Mike McCready @ 7:00 am

I’ve decided to only feature four songs per week (Mon-Thur) and to leave Friday for a weekly recap. I may change this policy in the future. I’m playing it fast and loose as I learn what seems to please you the most. I also felt like last Friday’s song was eclipsed by the weekly recap I also published on the same day.

If you’re into songs, songwriting and hearing what’s being created by hundreds of songwriters you can check out the RavenousRaven songwriting community. You submit your songs for free and they choose one song per day to be tweeted out to over 9,000 other songwriters and fans who then comment on the song all day via Twitter and on the site. It’s one of my favorite Twitter follows. It’s so interesting to hear how different songwriters react to each others’ work. RavenousRaven has grown so fast. They’re onto something.

Lastly, if you’d like to have this blog’s songs delivered to you via email or rss feed each day just subscribe here.

Once again, here are this week’s songs. I’ll see you back here and on Huffington Post after the weekend.

Monday – “Two Scoops” by Michelle Harding
Seethismxray

Tuesday – “And You Know Why” by DownTown Mystic
Seethismxray

Wednesday – “Human Drama” by Truth Panel

Who Should You Ask to Critique Your Songs?

Filed under: Career Coaching,Uncategorized — Mike McCready @ 7:47 am

Once you’ve decided that getting some expert feedback on your song is a good idea you then need to decide who is the right person to ask and how to access them.

As a rule of thumb, you should try to seek out the services of someone who has been successful in the market with similar music to your own. I would suggest going with a songwriter or a producer. My next choice would be an accomplished A&R person. These are the three kinds of people who have been successful because they write, record or find the best songs. So, they certainly know one when they hear one or are in the business of polishing good songs to make them great.

I find that crowd sourcing (playing the music for a focus group of music fans) and asking your non-songwriting friends and family is not the best idea. Fans tend to hear good production and can imagine hearing your song on the radio but they aren’t objective when it comes to whether or not the song is compelling. Friends and family are invested (at least emotionally) in you and they cannot be objective. Furthermore, keep in mind that songs catch fire in the market by a lot of people hearing the song in situations when they aren’t actively listening (while shopping, driving, during ads, in the background at restaurants etc). You can’t easily re-create those situations but professionals who have been successful time and time again really know what a hit song is all about.

Of course, my company is in the business of enabling artists to interact directly with music industry professionals so I’d be remiss not to point you here for some of the best in the business.

Song Of The Week for the Week Ending August 23, 2009

Filed under: Weekly Bests — Mike McCready @ 8:59 am

Click here to see which song was the song of the week for the week ending August 23rd, 2009.

There was some tough competition last week but here we are.

Judging these songs isn’t easy and I’m going to have to come up with some benefits for songs that almost make it but fall just short. One idea is to recycle them in future weeks to see if they can win in a different heat. Some of these songs are just as deserving of mass exposure as others. I’m open to suggestions so please leave comments if you have good ideas.
